Honoring Our Roots: The Black Collective

*The following is a press release for The Black Collective African Rhythm Black Expo and Fashion Show Extravaganza

May is designated as Heritage Month with its theme – A Tapestry of Cultures.  But even before the Heritage month theme was announced The Black Collective, a group of ‘conscious’ women (Ashanti Caesar, LaVerne Furbert, Lynelle Furbert, Maxine Esdaille and Peggy Burns), with a passion for their Bermudian and African heritage,  decided to put on a Black Expo during Heritage Month.  This Expo would feature local vendors who could highlight our African/Bermudian Culture

With Lynelle Furbert, whose fashion line is CultureWear,  on board, it just made sense to include in the Expo, a Fashion Show showcasing Lynette’s design expertise and with her Ghanaian aesthetic, as she spends much of the year in  Ghana.  So on Saturday 21st March, 2016, at the Pembroke Community Club (PCC) on North Shore Road Pembroke, the Black Collective will host The African Rhythm Expo and Fashion Show Extravaganza.  The event is under the Distinguished Patronage of Dr. Leonard Teye-Botchway, Honourary Consul for Ghana, and Mrs. Teye-Botchway.

The Expo, which starts at 2.00pm,  will be similar to an outdoor ’market’ experience and will take place on the eastern lawn of PCC.  This part of the Extravaganza is a FREE family event. Vendors include, but are not limited to:  Books -Rosheena Beek with her book “Mommy Says”; Drinks -Danny Simmons with his Bermuda Native Drinks made in Bermuda and featuring local in season fruits (cherries are in now); Food – Latoya Shelton will have vegan food available; Art -Gail Palacio and her art work; Fashion – Cheryl Darrell and her “everything African wear; and Jewelry – Michelle Laylor with her handmade jewelry.  This is not the complete list but persons should come out on the day to see the variety of vendors that will be there.  There is a playground on the lawn so kids can entertain themselves while their parents shop!

Now the FASHION SHOW – this will be the most unique Fashion Show of its kind in Bermuda.  It starts at 6.00pm and takes place in the PCC centre.  This show features totally authentic African materials – fabrics, leather, jewelry and Lynelle Furbert’s unique perspective on colour and design.  She says “the fabrics speak to her’ when she is shopping in the Ghana markets!  The result is a Fashion Show Extravaganza like nothing seen in Bermuda before.  During the Fashion Show there will be entertainment – Princess Black will be signing; Donquil dance troupe will be dancing;  as well as complimentary hors d’ oeuvres, and a cash wine bar.

Of special note is that all the clothes are wearable by the ’ordinary’ man or woman who has ’an extraordinary’ sense of style.  Yes, there are clothes for men, which are as fine as the outfits for women.  Whether the clothes are from the Office Wear scene or the Casual scene, or any of the other scenes,  these clothes are designed to be worn by Bermudians.  And because they are designed to be worn, Lynelle has agreed to auction off all items at the end of the show.  Many of the models already have ‘dibs’ on some of the outfits they are wearing, but you might get your Bermuda Day or Cup Match outfit from the Fashion Show or from the Vendors’ Expo!!

We have been able to put on this unique event with the support of our Community Partners, who include Bermuda Healthcare Services,  Bermuda Sanitation and Engineering, Mr. Patrick Tannock, Island Construction, the Bermuda Industrial Union, Goslings, and The Marketplace.  We would like to thank Pembroke Community Club for their support and assistance as well as other behind the scenes helpers.
