Bermuda Day Half Marathon Derby 2017

Donawa Wins, Breary Two Time Champion

Bermuda Day 2017 was celebrated across the island in near perfect weather. The theme for this year’s event was “Our Sporting Heritage” and the tradition of beginning with the half marathon derby was fitting. There were associated sporting events including the Sinclair Packwood Memorial cycle race and the Lister Insurance Junior Classic Invitational road race.

Over 600 runners started the Bermuda Half Marathon Derby, which was finally won by long time top veteran Jay Donawa in a time of 1hr. 20mins 08secs. After many years of racing Donawa the perennial bridesmaid crossed the line first greeted by an enthusiastic crowd. Without hesitation, the 44-year-old champion indicated that the Derby sponsored by Appleby would be his last. He thanked his supporters and stated, “I’m retired now”. In the men’s division rounding out the top five finishers were Evan Naunde, Chris Harris, Art Paulino and Glen Wilks 2nd through 5th respectively.

Deon Breary (47) won the women’s race. She crossed the line with loud cheers from her supporters in a time of 1hr. 38mins 38secs. Breary is now a two-time winner of the Marathon Derby. The top five women finishers were Deon Breary, Martina Olcheski-Bell, Karen Smith, Kristen Palmer and Victoria Fiddick. See the complete race results at www.bermudatiming.bm
