Tuesday Tune In – The 9-5 Artist

I know it’s been awhile since I’ve tuned you into anything new. I am, however, happy to report that I am BACK with new art and artists so say tuned in for more Tuesday Tune Ins.

Now on to our regular programming…

During my way too long hiatus I was able to do a lot of thinking and a lot of talking to friends, family, co-workers and the like and what I’ve found is this: there is a plethora of 9-5 artists out there.

When I say 9-5 artists I don’t mean the ones that are getting a hefty paycheck or publicity, no, I’m talking about those who are stuck with jobs that just “pay the bills.” The sanitation worker. The school principal. The politician. The technician. The store clerk. Those guys. I’m sure they like what they do, some may even love what they do but that’s not where their passion lies. Not for real. Sure they may put their passion into their work but can they comfortably creative in what they do without limitation? Without someone saying they can or can’t wear or say or do? I have yet to meet a person who lights up at the thought of discussing insurance or banking. Nor have I seen someone get passionate about expressing their thoughts on how to best be an administrative assistant. But talk about a book or a song or a movie or even ask them how to make jewelry and the conversation is endless. They radiate so much joy that it’s hard not to feel all warm and fuzzy too. That’s what I mean by the 9-5 artist. That painter that doesn’t get the chance to paint. That musician that only has the chance to sing in the shower or at church. That writer that only has the opportunity to write memos.

We are everywhere. Stuck in careers that limit our ability to shine, leaving us with talents and passions that only come out during the occasional Christmas party with two too many cocktails. We are everywhere, painting late nights just to get the Muses to quiet their mutterings  or writing epic poems in order to express our inner most desires that would usually go unheard if spoken. We are everywhere, dancing in clubs or after work for fun. We are everywhere and we are looking for a way to make what we do mainstream; to make a decent living off of what we love on an island that is bursting at the seams. We are everywhere and we are waiting to reveal ourselves. We 9-5 artists.
